Our Mission

Friends of the Animals (FOA) is a nonprofit, volunteer-driven animal shelter located in Tipton, Iowa, and proudly serves as the only shelter in Cedar County. Our mission is simple: to give every dog and cat a safe place, proper care, and the chance at a loving, lifelong home.

Who We Are

FOA is operated through a small staff and a powerful network of dedicated volunteers. Every person involved with our organization shares one goal — to protect the well-being of animals and help them find families where they can thrive.

As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, every donation we receive goes directly back into helping animals, whether through daily care, medical treatment, supplies, facility expenses, foster support, or future expansion plans.

What We Do

We care for animals of all ages and situations — from newborn puppies and kittens, to adults searching for their forever home, to seniors simply looking for a warm lap to rest in. We also take in medical and special-needs cases that require extra time, attention, and resources.

FOA works closely with community members and other shelters to provide a safe place for animals that need help.

How Animals Enter Our Care

Animals come to FOA in several ways:

  • Owner surrenders

  • Stray intakes

  • Transfers from other shelters and rescues

Every animal that enters our care receives compassion, safety, and a full plan for recovery and placement.

Medical Care & Preparation for Adoption

Once accepted into FOA, every animal receives:

  • A full veterinary exam

  • Updated vaccinations

  • Spay or neuter surgery (if needed)

  • Microchipping

These steps not only prepare animals for adoption but also help prevent pet overpopulation and future health complications.

Foster Program

Many of our animals are placed into foster homes where they receive individual attention in a real home environment. Foster families help us learn about each animal’s personality, behavior, and needs — which helps ensure the best possible match with an adoptive family.

Animals with medical needs or special care requirements often benefit the most from foster placement during their healing and transition.

Foster-to-Adopt Process

Most adoptions begin with our foster-to-adopt program, typically lasting about two weeks. This trial period allows both the family and the animal to adjust, ask questions, and ensure the fit is right. Timeframes may be adjusted depending on the situation.

Life After Adoption

Once an adoption is finalized, FOA follows up with families to provide support and answer any remaining questions. Our goal is not just adoption — it’s a successful, lifelong bond between families and their new companions.
